Bush Sprouts in Schools
We run our Bush Sprouts Programme weekly, in your School or pre-school’s local bush area; Mentoring your teachers and students to create a quality, sustainable nature play programme.
The Bush Sprouts programme is currently run in 8 schools/centres in the Wellington region, recieving positive reviews from Principals, whānau and children.
We may have funding available for your School/centre to set up and run the Bush Sprouts programme in your local bush!
The Bush Sprouts programme is a long-term nature play programme where our experienced and qualified staff take children and teachers and support staff from your School to your local bush weekly. Our Bush Sprouts programme is inspired by the Forest School philosophy and fits in well with Te Whariki and the NZ curriculum vision and principles. We have a curriculum links document available upon request.
During a term’s Bush Sprouts sessions, teachers will be mentored and gain experience and skills to enable confidence to continue running Bush Sprouts sessions after our influence. We involve you in the risk management and planning, so that these skills and knowledge are passed on.
Programmes are tailored to your place and your people; so could involve weekly day long sessions with a targeted group, two half-day sessions a week with small groups, or another make-up that suits your school/centre.
Place-based learning, and in particular outdoor free play, allow risk taking and challenge. These promote resilience, social competency, self-confidence, group ethos, leadership, working theories and a whole lot more benefits that are hard to teach in a classroom/centre-based setting.
“Children will be smarter, better able to get along with others, healthier and happier when they have regular opportunities for free and unstructured play in the out-of-doors (Burdette and Whitaker, 2005).
